H.R. 22 Passes Committee
The full
House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform unanimously reported
out H.R. 22, which would allow the Postal Service to use billions of dollars
already saved in its Retiree Health Benefits Fund to deal with current financial
exigencies. The bill covers a three-year period - not the eight years covered
by the original legislation. However, it is strongly supported by the NPMHU.
In the wake
of this victory in the House Committee, NPMHU President John F. Hegarty
commented, "It has taken nearly six months to get this far. It shows the power
of grassroots involvement. All of those visits to Representatives and messages
of support for H.R. 22 paid off.
"We've
still got a difficult road in front of us, but every journey starts with a
single step. The next stop is a vote by the entire House of Representatives."
There are
338 cosponsors of this bill. Before the full House of Representatives votes,
every Mail Handler activist must contact his or her Representative and ask for
support of H.R. 22 on the final House vote.
The message
is simple: H.R. 22 has been voted out of Committee unanimously. It will allow
the Postal Service financial relief without costing tax payers one penny, and
without any change in service or postage costs. It has not yet been scheduled
for a vote by the House. Please vote for H.R. 22 when it comes up in the House.
President
Hegarty added, "Particular thanks go to Representatives John McHugh (R-NY) and
Danny Davis (D-IL), who introduced the legislation. Also, Steve Lynch (D-MA),
Jason Chaffitz (R-UT), Ed Towns (D-NY) and Darryl Issa (R-CA)."
