*** Keep 6 Day Mail Delivery ***

TAKE ACTION now keep 6 Day Delivery

The best way to ruin the Postal Service, is to take away part of the Service. That is exactly what 5 day delivery would do. What management forgets often, is that the Postal Service is a SERVICE for the American people. It is not the United States Postal Business. We should all strive to "keep the Service, in the Postal Service.'

The Postal Rate Commission (PRC) is seeking public comments regarding 5 day delivery. The Postal Service is proposing to stop delivery of mail on Saturdays. Many members of Congress are opposed to 5 day mail delivery. This is evident by the amount of co-sponsors to House Resolution 173. Although it is not a bill, it does show that we have the support of Congress. It would take an act of Congress for mail delivery to change to only 5 days a week.

The PRC will begin hearings on July 12th. The PRC recommendation is expected to be made in October.

We all need to TAKE ACTION NOW. We should also encourage our family, friends, and neighbors, to also TAKE ACTION NOW. Here is what we should all do;

(1) Contact your Congressional Leaders - Let both of your Senators know that you are opposed to the 5 day delivery of mail. If your Congressman supports H Res. 173 thank him, if he doesn't ask him to. You can get information on H Res. 173 by clicking on the link. Also, if you don't know who your representatives are, go to the NPMHU Legislative Center.

(2) Send your comment to the PRC - The Postal Rate Commission is seeking public input and comments on, "...the Postal Service proposal end carrier street address delivery, collection at the blue collection boxes and most originating mail processing on Saturdays in the United States."

The PRC is asking for answers to several key questions:

  • Will the savings the Postal Service anticipates be as significant as they estimate? NO, the Postal Service has traditionally projected incorrect cost savings estimates. The cost savings would be much less than they project.

  • Will mail volume decline more than the Postal Service anticipates?  YES, if services are cut, more and more customers will do business with our competitors or look for alternatives to mail delivery.

  • Will businesses and citizens have service that remains adequate to meet their needs? Obviously not. Both citizens and businesses rely on the Postal Service to be fully operational on Saturday. Not picking up mail in collection boxes would delay mail even more. It is hard enough to find a collection box since they have been removing them! Carrier street delivery is essential.

  • And will the national economic impact of service reductions offset or add to the savings that are proposed? The Postal Service drives a multi-billion dollar mailing industry. With less services offered, this industry will suffer. If the industry suffers, employment will also suffer. This proposal will have a direct impact not only with the loss of Postal Service employee positions, but those connected to the mailing industry as well. This country does not need a more unemployed workforce.

I am opposed to the USPS proposal 6 Day to 5 Day delivery and other changes. Citizens rely on 6 Day delivery for; checks, medications, etc. Banks and businesses are open on Saturdays and need mail delivery.

The USPS cost savings would be less than projected, having traditionally projected incorrect estimates.

If services are cut, mail volume will decline much more than projected, customers will be lost.

This would lower the quality of service and be inadequate.

The Economy will also suffer. The USPS drives a multi-billion dollar mailing industry. This will cause a loss of USPS jobs, & mailing industry jobs too. The USA does not need more unemployed! There are many other alternatives that should be explored before cutting the SERVICE from the Postal Service such as, the proper funding of retirement programs. The CSRS has been overpaid by BILLIONS, causing a “stamp tax” on the public.  These excess funds could be used for the Retiree Health Benefit funding for future FERS retirees.

Cong. Israel - Opposes 5 Day Delivery

NY Congressman Steve Israel (D-2nd) held a press conference on March 6th stating his opposition to 5 day mail delivery. Cong. Israel indicated his displeasure to the mis-management in DC regarding overpayments to the (CSRS) pension fund ($78 Billion) and pre-funding of future (FERS) retiree health benefits. Representatives from the NALC Branch 6000 and APWU Long Island Area Local were in attendance. Representing Local 300 was Kevin Tabarus Treasurer, and Stan Howard Branch President ISC/JFK. Postal Regulatory Commission - Comments on 5 Delivery???

The Commission is inviting public comments on a Postal Service proposal to end carrier street address delivery, collection at blue collection boxes and incoming mail processing on Saturdays in the United States. This is one of the most significant changes the Postal Service has ever presented to the Commission. The Postal Service is required to ask the Commission for an Advisory Opinion on any change in nationwide service that it proposes.
